IRON CROWN

Lord Balrin is dying, and his son wants more than his father ever had. Iron Crown is a text-based story game told in short scenes. You have the opportunity to alter your destiny. Every choice you make has an effect on the outcome. You can play to your liking as you balance your Gold, Soldiers, Church and Lords. Follow the story through three chapters, from your father’s bedside to the capital to the day the boy king comes of age. The bars you finish with decide which paths open next and how your story ends. How far will you go for the crown?

How to play

Click Begin to start. You will get two, sometimes three choices per scene. There are four reputation bars: Gold, Soldiers, Church and Lords. Each choice has an effect on one or more of these bars. There are five different endings to the story. There is no game over, but not every ending is a good one. The story is about you, Lord Balrin’s son, and how far you will go for power while a boy king sits on the throne. There are different paths to get to the end, and they are all your choice. After you finish chapter one or two, you will receive a code. You can start over any time and enter the code to continue, or start a new game. The start over option is always at the bottom of the screen. Make your decision for each scene and choose wisely.

Behind the game

This is another player-submitted idea that did not leave a name or title. The idea was a medieval knight game told as a text-based RPG. The premise was that you are the son of a powerful leader, and when you come of age you take over as king and have the power to do anything. To make it more interesting, I added multiple paths, like a storybook with different endings. This isn’t my favorite style of game, with all the story and reading, but I can see the appeal.

Hints

You can’t see what a choice costs until after you pick, so keep an eye on the bars. Almost nothing is a free win. Most choices raise one bar and lower another. The bars carry from chapter to chapter, so a weak spot early can close a path later. In chapters two and three, some options only appear if your bars are high enough, and the game won’t tell you what you’re missing. If you want to see a different path, play chapter one differently. Being kind all the way through is not always how you win, and being ruthless is not always how you lose.

Iron Crown, scene 8 of 20, The winter food: the four reputation bars along the top read Gold 55, Soldiers 30, Church 70 and Lords 45; below them the stone hall with two red banners, the lord’s chair, one guard and two lit braziers; the scene says there is not enough grain stored for winter and someone will go hungry, and three plaques offer cutting the soldiers’ share, the church’s share or the village’s share, with a small Start over link underneath.
